Abhyangam in Three Steps at Quiet Healing Center
1. Dry Potali Swedana (Pre-warming therapy)
• A warm, dry herbal potali (cloth pouch filled with roasted herbal powders/leaves/salt as per need) is gently patted or rubbed over the body.
• Purpose: Opens up skin pores, stimulates circulation, loosens stiffness, and prepares the body to absorb oil effectively.
2. Oil Application (Abhyangam proper)
• Warm, medicated oil is applied with gentle, synchronized strokes over the whole body.
• Purpose: Nourishes tissues, lubricates joints, improves skin texture, calms the nervous system, and removes toxins.
3. Steam Therapy (Swedana after oil)
• Patient is given herbal steam to induce sweating after oil massage.
• Purpose: Helps deeper penetration of oil, flushes out toxins through sweat, relaxes muscles, and enhances overall detoxification.
The Ayurvedic Principle
• Vata dosha is considered the root cause of many imbalances (stress, dryness, pain, stiffness).
• Abhyangam, with its warm, medicated oils, pacifies Vata, nourishes the Dhatus (tissues), and improves Ojas (vital energy).
• It also helps balance Pitta (by cooling the mind) and Kapha (by stimulating circulation).
